What is Syndrome X?
Syndrome X is a term used to describe a "constellation", or cluster, of serious disorders that co-exist, and significantly increase one's risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death. Syndrome X is also known as Metabolic Syndrome X, Insulin Resistance Syndrome or Pluri-Metabolic Syndrome.


Syndrome X is characterised by:

	Insulin Resistance
	High Blood Pressure
	Low HDL-cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol) and high LDL-cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol)
	Upper body or abdominal obesity
	Abnormalities of blood clotting

Syndrome X is closely linked with insulin resistance. That is, the body's tissues are less sensitive to insulin. As a result, insulin levels increase in the blood stream instead of getting into the muscle cells. The high levels of insulin in the blood can then lead to other metabolic abnormalities. Sometimes, insulin resistance can become so severe that a person develops Type II diabetes, which is also known as adult-onset diabetes. When this occurs, a person's risk of cardiovascular complications like a heart attack or stroke increase significantly.


Who Has Syndrome X?
It has been estimated that 1 in 3 people in the UK either have a predisposition towards or have developed symptoms of Syndrome X. The underlying cause of Syndrome X is not fully understood though many scientists and researchers believe that this condition is strongly determined by genetics. However, the over consumption of refined carbohydrates and low fat foods with their hidden sugar content is also a major contributor.
