Sarsaparilla Root
Used for rheumatism, kidney diseases and skin problems,
this herb contains three hormones testosterone, progesterone
and cortin that have shown a number of therapeutic applications.
Testosterone has been shown to increase physical strength
and mental alertness, improve the condition of patients
with angina pectoris and improve diseases involving
the blood vessels in the legs and feet.1 Progesterone,
which has a calming effect on womb muscles, has been
shown to ease spasmodic pain following childbirth. Cortin,
which is secreted by the adrenal gland, protects the
body against infections, nervous depression and general
weakness.1 This herb increases circulation to rheumatic
joints and studies have shown that, due to its high
saponin content, eliminates the urea content of the
blood. Chinese research has found that sarsaparilla
acts as a tonic, rejuvenating the nerves, blood and

Saw Palmetto
Once used by the Mayans to treat complaints of the urinary
tract, today research has found that it acts as a diuretic
and urinary antiseptic. There are also compounds in
saw palmetto that prevent the conversion of testosterone
to dihydrotestosterone, which helps prevent the development
of prostate disease.4 In fact, clinical studies have
shown that saw palmetto is as effective as Proscar,
a pharmaceutical drug, in treating enlargement of the
prostate gland. Saw Palmetto also holds promise for
women as well. Clinical studies have shown that it corrects
hormonal imbalance by normalising oestrogen levels.4

Shitake Mushroom
A mushroom with a distinctive flavour and texture, shitake
mushrooms contain lentinan, a polysaccharide, that strengthens
the immune system by increasing the proliferation of
T cells, which can maintain the function of a healthy
immune system.2 Rich in 18 amino acids and B vitamins,
they have been found in a joint study by the Medical
Department at Koibe University and Nippon Kinoko Institute
in Japan to effectively treat cancer.2 Shitake mushrooms
have antitumor properties.2 In addition to their anticancer
effects, shitake mushrooms are also used to prevent
high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, control
and lower cholesterol levels, build resistance to disease

Skullcap
The name of this herb comes from the leather helmets
the early Roman soldiers would wear.2 This herb is a
powerful nervine, or nerve tonic.2 It is good for anxiety,
hyperactivity, nervous disorders and can be used to
aid sleep, relive muscle cramps, pain, spasms and stress.1
It is also useful for rheumatism and according to Nutrition
Almanac, functional heart troubles where there is irregular
action.1 It promotes a sound, restful sleep without
the side effects that accompany certain prescription
or over-the-counter sleep medications. Clinical trials
have found that it has a tranquilising effect on an
excited nervous system and can calm nervous twitching
and muscle spasms.4 In addition, skullcap can lower
blood serum cholesterol and prevent high blood pressure.4

Squaw Vine
This herb has a rich history of use as a uterine tonic.
It was employed by Native Americans for pregnancy and
childbirth.to its popularity and versatility a herb.4
It is primarily used for childbirth and menstrual disorders.4

aid childbirth. Studies have reported that it acts as
a uterine tonic and stimulates the ovaries. It also
aids menstrual cramps and soothes the nervous system.2

Strawberry Leaf
Rich in iron, potassium, sodium, magnesium and rutin,
strawberry leaf has both astringent and diuretic properties.1,6
According to the German Commission E, it is used to
treat catarrh of the gastrointestinal tract, diarrhoea,
intestinal sluggishness, liver disease, jaundice, catarrh
of the respiratory tract, gout, rheumatoid arthritis,
nervous tension, kidney ailments involving gravel and
stones.6 According to the PDR, due to its tannin content,
it could also be used for mouth and throat inflammation.
