Kelp
Kelp, which belongs to the algae family, grows primarily
in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and can grow to many
meters in length.6 It is a rich, natural food source
of iodine.4 As such it is a good herbal treatment for
hypothyroidism and obesity.4 Because of its ability
to boost thyroid function, kelp may increase energy
by regulating metabolism, which may also boost thermogenesis
(fat burning), says Paul Barney in The Doctor's Guide
to Natural Medicine.4 Other studies, conducted in Japan,
show that algin, found in kelp, may be useful in preventing
breast cancer. Algin, it is believed, stimulates the
T-cells of the immune system, which may help fight cancerous
cells. The micro nutrients in kelp also help to regulate
hormones and increase stamina.4 Products: CellEnergy,
Electrolyte Stamina Tablets, Electro-Vita-Min, In Control,
PriMale, Transcend and ConcenTrace® Tablets.
Licorice
Treasured by the Egyptians as a sweet drink, licorice
was used by many early cultures as an effective herbal
treatment for many internal pains.1 Roman soldiers,
for instance, were given licorice in their rations.1
It has anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral,
anti-fungal, anti-platelet and anti-ulcer effects.6
Licorice has been utilised in the treatment of arthritis,
circulatory insufficiency, colds, coughs, female complaints,
hypo- and hyper-glycemia, ulcers and immune weakness.4
It also stimulates the production of interferon. Clinical
studies show that it confers a protective effect against
gastric ulcers and helps heal peptic ulcers. The German
Commission E has approved its use in the treatment of
cough, bronchitis and gastritis.5 Contraindications:
cholestatic liver disorders and cirrhosis, hypertonia,
hypokalemia, severe kidney insufficiency and pregnancy.5
